The History of Kit Kats

Nestle began producing KitKats in 1935 and released them in London, initially. But before these delicious chocolate bars became the world-famous candy bars that they are today, "KitKat" referred to something very different. In the early 1700s, the "Kit-Cat Club" was a political and literary club that met at a tavern run by a man named Christopher Catt. They named themselves after Catt's nickname -- "Kit Cat." This nickname was also borrowed for the mutton pies that they often ate at the meetings.

 

But how did the name go from a meat pie to a candy bar? These meat pies, or "Kit-Cats" were once considered the meals of the working class. But at the height of the industrial revolution, lunchtimes for workers started getting shorter and shorter. They needed a way to eat a full meal quickly, and candy bars were the answer. When Nestle took over production of these delicious chocolate bars, they wanted to market them as "real food," so they gave them the name "KitKat." Thankfully we now know that candy bars do not make a very balanced meal.
