Juicy apples and some warm spices make Grandma's Classic Apple Brown Betty one of the best apple dessert recipes you'll ever try. Its warm flavor is so incredibly comforting, almost like those huge bear hugs your grandma used to give you. Surprisingly, this brown Betty recipe doesn't call for any brown sugar, but the spices in the buttery crumble topping surely make up for it. This is one traditional American dish that you and your family are going to want to make over and over again.

Cooking Vessel Size9 inch pie plate

  • 4 cups peeled and sliced tart apples (such as Granny Smith), about 5 apples
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup buter, cut into cubes

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

  2. Grease 9 inch pie plate with 1 tablespoon butter.

  3. Add prepared apples to pie plate.

  4. Sprinkle orange juice over apples.

  5. In small bowl, mix together sugar, flour, cinnamon and nutmeg with a fork.

  6. Cut in butter, using pastry blender, fork or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  7. Sprinkle topping over apples.

  8. Place pie plate on a baking sheet and bake in preheated oven 45 minutes to 1 hour.

  9. Check at 45 minute marker: if crumb topping is not browning, add more small chunks of butter to the top and continue cooking for 10-15 minutes until top is crisp.

Does the orange juice need to be pulp-free, or does it matter in this recipe? I think this would be a good dish to have on movie night. We can put on a little caramel sauce and some vanilla ice cream. Maybe some chocolate sprinkles or a chopped peanuts would be a great way to top off the dessert.
